Jorge Sosa & Javier Moro Hernandez

World Premiere | Generación Perdida

Friday, July 18 | 7:30pm

Generación Perdida is a monodrama-opera composed by Mexican composer Jorge Sosa, based on the book by Mexican-Colombian poet Javier Moro Hernandez (Ediciones Periféricas). The piece explores the humanitarian crisis affecting Mexico and Latin America, where kidnapping and forced disappearances have profoundly impacted countless communities over the past decade. It reflects on the complex realities of violence in the region and the broader social and political forces at play.

Rather than depicting violence directly, Generación Perdida seeks to create space for reflection and dialogue through the expressive power of poetry and music. By juxtaposing art and beauty against the weight of these themes, the piece invites audiences to engage in conversation about memory, resilience, and the pursuit of peace.

“In Generación Perdida, I seek to address the theme of violence as an act of remembrance, a way to bear witness to this dark chapter in our history. I firmly believe that art and literature play an essential role in understanding and preserving the memory of the historical moments we are forced to witness. Language is a crucial tool in this process—through poetry, we can narrate pain, foster understanding, and generate empathy for the victims who journey across our continent and our borders”. Javier Moro Hernandez, poet.
"In 2019, Javier shared with me some of the poems that would eventually become Generación Perdida. In his writing, I found my own voice—he managed to articulate, with poetic beauty and haunting eloquence, the senseless violence our communities in Latin America endure daily. The work weaves together chilling journalistic accounts with deeply moving poetry, painting an unflinching yet lyrical portrait of a generation lost to violence. My hope is that this piece ignites a spark—one that leads to reflection, dialogue, and collective action. Generación Perdida is a memorial to the countless lives lost, and in opposition to the horrors of violence and war, we offer the beauty of art as an act of defiance, remembrance, and hope. Jorge Sosa, composer.
