Young Artists & Community Engagement Project | Don Giovanni

Young Artists & Community Engagement Project | Don Giovanni

June 16th, 2023

June 17th, 2023

With a special combination of promising young singers, story twists, some queer and gender-bending performers*, Teatro Grattacielo, in collaboration with Camerata Bardi International Academy Young Artists program, present Mozart’s arguably greatest opera, Don Giovanni, during NYC Pride Month. Updated as a celebration of Spanish chic-kitsch, set in the ’90s complete with air couches, Chanel clothes and lots of jewels, this production is inspired by Pedro Almodovar’s “Women on the verge of a nervous breakdown”. On the stage will be neon bull sculptures, a five-piece couch covered with Pier Mondrian fabric, and lots of gazpacho.

The characters are driven by their deepest desires and fears, living their lives in a continued state of suspension—a suspension of time, a suspension of senses.

Step into ‘90s Spain, where food and pop culture serve as expressive mediums!

* By casting diverse performers and showcasing different gender identifications and sexual orientations on stage, Teatro Grattacielo supports and celebrates the LGBTQAI community.

On Saturday, June 17th we are honered to offer 140 #FREE tickets exclusively to Schools/Underprivileged/Underserved/LGTBQAI/Elderly communities in NYC thanks to the generous support of the Virginia B. Toulmin Foundation. If you represent a school, or a community center, please get in touch with us via email (stefanoskoroneos@grattacielo.org).

This performance is part of Teatro Grattacielo’s all-inclusive multidisciplinary educational program called “Creative Tableaux” which aims to educate and introduce schools, our city’s communities and young artists to opera and the arts through active participation.

The production taps into Almodóvar’s dark and scandalous humor. In a lamé dress and towering stilettos, ensemble soprano Natasha Scheuble chewed gum, mixed cocktails for guests and wielded Giovanni’s golden gun, a tribute to the James Bond film “The Man With the Golden Gun.” Courtney Smith, NJArts.net

COLLABORATIVE INITIATIVES

“PASS THE FLAME” CANDLES by A Discovering Network

Our mission is to ignite positive change through the power of candles. Pass the Flame, created by Thisvi Ekmektzoglou, is a global/local initiative that emerged during the challenging times of COVID in NYC. We believe in the transformative power of art collaboration, where candles become vessels for stories waiting to be shared. By partnering with Pedro Silva, a talented painter (@Pedrosilvaart), we merge spell art and the craftswoman’s expertise to provoke intellectual and emotional reactions. Our candles not only illuminate spaces but also support good causes and human rights-related projects. Join us as we pass the flame of compassion, inspiration, and social impact.

PASS THE FLAME will be sold at performances, creating an immersive experience that engages multiple senses. A portion of the income generated from these sales will be donated to an LGTBQI organization in NYC, supporting their important work and promoting inclusivity and equality.
